A NutrUp guide

When it's not the food

Two honest weeks where no food lines up is a result, not a failure. Sleep and stress show up in the gut too, and nothing standing out is an answer too.

Stress and sleep, one tap each

A food diary that only holds food can only ever blame food. Add two more lines a day: how you slept, and whether the day was a stressful one. Over two weeks, look at the bad nights and ask what they had in common. Sometimes it's a meal. Sometimes it's three short nights in a row.

In NutrUp, How do you feel? has Stressed and Slept badly for the day, one tap each, beside the eight symptoms. They go into the diary and onto the report, so when a dietitian asks how you slept that week, there's an answer.

Quiet days, marked

Half of every count is the meals where nothing happened, and they're the easiest half to lose. Nobody opens a notebook to write "fine". So a plain diary is really a list of bad days, and bad days alone only confirm what you already suspected.

NutrUp asks at 9 pm: "Anything to log from today? Even mild symptoms help. If it was a clear day, hold this down and say so." Hold it down and tap "Nothing today", and the day is marked clear without opening the app. The check-in skips itself on days you've already logged something, and a symptom logged later takes the mark back.

The NutrUp Lock Screen line: Dinner at 7:21 pm, Restaurant curry, 3:28 since dinner, a line filling toward now, and Bloating, Pain, Reflux and Nothing as one-tap words

Sample diaryNothing is a tap too. On the Lock Screen it says nothing has followed this meal so far.

Two weeks where nothing lines up

Give it the two weeks first. A food gets its own line once it's in six meals, so a week in, no food has one yet. That isn't nothing lining up. That's not enough data. At two weeks, what you have is a count for every food you ate often enough, with and without, and none of them reached a line. NutrUp's own words for that are "Nothing clear yet. That's useful too." It is. It says the next question is probably not about one food. It says the foods you've been avoiding came up clear or not enough data, which is a reason to try one again. And it comes with the sleep, the stress and the clear days on the same page.

Honest is the catch. Every meal, including the boring ones. Every symptom with its time, even the mild ones. The quiet days marked. If one of those is missing, you don't have a result yet. You have two more weeks to do. Here's what a diary that answers looks like.

Bring it anyway

A diary that found no food is worth the appointment. On NutrUp Pro, the report puts it on one page: days logged, meals, each symptom's count and how strong, the days marked clear, and what the diary found, even when that's nothing. No prose, just the counts. What to bring your dietitian covers the rest. If your symptoms are severe or getting worse, don't wait two weeks. See a doctor now.

Good questions

Can stress or bad sleep show up as gut symptoms?

They can show up in the diary, which is as far as a diary can go. It can't tell you why. What it can show is that your bad nights tracked with bad sleep or a stressed day more than with any food, which is worth saying out loud at an appointment.

Is a diary that finds nothing a waste of two weeks?

No, as long as the two weeks were honest: every meal, every symptom with its time, and the quiet days marked. Then no food reaching a line is a result. It narrows the list, and it tells your doctor or dietitian the next question probably isn't about one food.

How do I mark a clear day in NutrUp?

Hold down the 9 pm check-in and tap Nothing today, without opening the app. Or open How do you feel? and tap Nothing today there. Either way the day shows as Clear, and a symptom logged later that day takes the mark back.

Should I keep logging after two weeks?

If you can, yes. Some patterns take three or four weeks to show, and NutrUp lists a food that might matter under Worth watching before it becomes a finding. If nothing has moved by then, you have your answer, and it's still worth bringing.

NutrUp does the counting.
